Feel better than ever before through our commitment to achieving superior outcomes: mind, body and spirit.
Written by Daphne Ardizon, MSPT, CMPT, Director of Clinical Outcomes at CORA Physical Therapy
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), health is defined as a state of physical, mental and social well-being. When you get injured (or your health status is altered), you focus your attention on what you will do to fix what’s physically not working, but how much do you consider your mindset or social capacity?
In order to achieve optimal results we must look at all three components: physical, mental and social well-being. Think about it. How did all-time NBA greats like Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan win so many basketball games? Was it based solely on physical ability? Nope. They had the necessary mentality to be the best, and understood that teamwork gets results. And that’s how we get it done here at CORA.
No, that does not mean we, as physical therapists, train you to be the next Michael Jordan (well, maybe sometimes). What it does mean is that we consider all aspects of your well-being to achieve the best possible outcome for your health!
What Do We Consider? 3 Keys to Getting Your Life Back on Track
When thinking about the three key factors to your success, there are a few important questions to consider. Let’s take a moment to break it all down.
- Physical: Do you have any limitations in motion or function? Are there any other external factors that exist that may be contributing to your pain?
- Mental: How are your perceptions (i.e. perception of pain) influencing your function? (listen: Science Behind Pain with Dr. Adriaan Louw)
- Social well-being: Is your ailment affecting your relationships or preventing you from participating in social events?
Now that we’ve answered those important questions, and addressed some of the key components to your overall success, let’s explore how physical therapy can help you feel better than ever before.
Feel Better Than Ever Before
As Physical Therapists, we are trained to examine your health status by asking you the right questions related to your injury, observing your movement and measuring what we can track with psychometrically sound, objective measurement tools. This is how we are then able to determine the right game plan for you.
In other words, we take your input and combine our professional examination to create goals that help achieve the desired end result with custom treatment plans unique to you. Sounds simple enough, right? Well somewhat. As you can imagine, there is an infinite number of questions we can ask and many measurement tools to choose from. The trick is choosing the right plan of care and treatments for you to help achieve the outcomes we are seeking in order to get you feeling healthy and pain-free.
The Patient Experience: Engage, Motivate, Improve Outcomes
Evidence shows better outcomes are achieved when there is a positive alliance between patient and therapist. If everyone involved in your care starts aligned on your goals, then it becomes easier to work together towards achieving the same end result. It’s teamwork at its finest!
One way we ensure this alliance is through the use of patient-reported outcome measures. At CORA, it’s why we’ve partnered with Focus on Therapeutic Outcomes, Inc. (FOTO) to provide electronic patient-reported outcome surveys so that it’s easy for you -the patient- to provide input from your first visit through your last visit (i.e. discharge). Once the initial FOTO survey is complete, we are able to sit down to discuss your survey results and align with what we find in our own physical assessment. The cool thing about FOTO is that it also gives us a score based on your feedback and compares your status to similar patients within FOTO’s expansive database. Then, based on the FOTO information, we create therapy goals so that we can work towards the best outcome for you!
What else? We also check-in at different intervals over the course of your treatment plan with additional FOTO surveys to make sure you stay on track. That’s how we keep it comprehensive and address exactly what you need. Not only do these measurements help get you better, they help us become better therapists to consistently deliver exceptional outcomes above National standards.
